Environmental exposures to organic dusts, droplets, gases, including chemicals or animal materials can cause various allergic responses. Clinical and environmental/occupational histories provide the first clue by the association of symptons with exposure, and by recovery during absence. However, history is reactions and variations in subjective assessment of exposure.

Most frequent clinical diagnoses are:

  • Dermatitis (frequently due to allergy to nickel and other meals, dytes, latex, cosmetic constituents, plants)
  • Rhinitis (mostly caused by pollen, mites, occupational dusts)
  • Bronchial asthma (for details see below)
